Flat water at La Palme: ideal ground for Big Air progress

The tramontane gives you the power to get high. The sea breeze offers something else: flat water, which changes everything for technical work.

Why flat water changes everything for Big Air

On flat water, every take-off and landing is more predictable — no chop to unsettle the landing or catch a board edge at the wrong moment. It is the ideal place to repeat a movement until it becomes automatic, without the extra variable of rough water.

Sea breeze vs tramontane: two conditions, two uses

The tramontane, an offshore wind that is stronger and gustier, remains the best option when you are chasing amplitude and power. The sea breeze, or the thermal breeze coming in off the sea, gives flat water on the La Palme lagoon, sheltered from the open-sea swell — less raw power, but ideal conditions for pure technical work.

Working on landings and style in a sea breeze

It is often in a sea breeze, thanks to the steadier wind, that the finest adjustments get worked on: the precision of a landing, the style of a rotation, the flow of a combination — details that make all the difference once the power of the tramontane returns.

Why alternating the two conditions speeds up your progress

A rider who only trains in strong wind builds power, but not always precision. Alternating tramontane and sea breeze lets you work both sides of Big Air — amplitude and control — instead of progressing along a single axis.

One thing to watch: the water level

The flat water at La Palme also depends on the level of the lagoon, which is not guaranteed all year — summer is often the most restrictive period on that front. So coaching is planned around the water level as much as around the wind strength, to pick the right day to work on your landings.

A seasonal constraint to plan around

The lagoon naturally gets shallower in summer, which reduces the depth available for safe jump landings. This constraint is specific to Big Air work — it does not affect beginner lessons, where shallower water is perfectly suitable. If your goal is specifically to progress on aerial tricks, it is better to plan your sessions at another spot in the area; do ask your coach about it.

Make the most of every kind of session

Whether the day's session is set up for power or for precision, coaching adapts to the actual conditions to get the most out of your progress.
